Tomatoes and Peppers for the High Tunnel
Tomatoes and Peppers for the High Tunnel
2011
The cool season vegetables that I planted last week have all germinated except the Premium Crop Broccoli, Celeriac and Celery. There are a few blocks where the Premium Crop Broccoli has germinated. The spinach and onions are just starting to peek through. I planted more seeds in each block of PC Broccoli and decided to give the others a few more days to germinate before replanting. As I was going through my seed packs I discovered some that I wanted to plant and I didn’t. They include:
Leek - King Richard
Spinach - Space
Mache - Vit
I haven’t grown leeks before. I’m anxious to see how they grow. I grew Space spinach in the tunnel last winter. I’m interested to see how it does as a spring crop outside the tunnel.
I was planning to plant tomatoes in the high tunnel in March this year. it takes about 6 weeks to get plants ready from seed so I am running a few weeks late. I still will plant them as soon as they are ready. I didn’t plant them last week because the soil heating mat needs to be set at a much higher temperature for tomatoes and peppers than it can be for lettuce. In the high tunnel I am planning to plant 14 determinate and 14 indeterminate tomato plants. It is time to plant the peppers for the regular garden so I planted all of them I want to grow this year. I planted 4 blocks of each of the tomato varieties. The ones that I don’t use in the high tunnel will be used for a low tunnel experiment. Here is a listing of the tomatoes and peppers I planted this year. Pink Beauty and Polbig are varieties recommended from the high tunnel mailing list I belong to. I grew Cherokee Chocolate and Mr. Stripey a few years ago and want to try them in the tunnel. The weird weather we had last spring and summer made it hard for tomatoes to produce. Stupice was my outstanding producer in the early summer last year so I’m including it in the high tunnel list.

Most of the cool season vegetables that I planted last week are up. Today I planted a few more that I forgot the tomatoes for the high tunnel and the peppers.
